Guide to Applicants

Guide to Applicants

Overview

Important Elements in the priority setting process are:

  1. Identifying and prioritising issues.
  2. Translating issues into scientifically feasible and commercially attractive projects.
  3. Transparent and collaborative approach to developing an application for funding of important work and, subsequently, conducting the investigations.
  4. Endorsement of SAFRAB for R&D proposals - FRDC relies heavily on the advice of SAFRAB for funding approvals.
  5. Annual competitive funding cycle beginning with the priority setting process, detailed in the Guide to Applicants section of this site, facilitated by SAFRAB.

The success of the client-based approach depends on:

  1. An informed Industry Sector/Stakeholder Group (the client) determining its own long-term research and development strategy (a plan of investigations that will systematically address issues crucial for development of the sector within an ecologically sustainable framework).
  2. Develop each year, before May, a short list of important issues arising from the plan.
  3. In conjunction with an appropriate research agency, translate each issue into a feasible project required to be funded for work to commence in the following financial year.
  4. In conjunction with SAFRAB's five step process, refine the funding application and direct it through the FRDC process or to another appropriate funding agency based on that agency's process.

Critical Assessment Factors
Whether the proposed research is appropriate for the ongoing development and sustainability of the seafood industry, maximum advantage is gained by prospective applicants working closely with industry projects.
