South Australia's Marine Environment

Overview

Major uses of South Australia's marine and coastal ecosystems are fishing, aquaculture, shipping, recreation and tourism, coastal development, mining and exploration, marine conservation, and as a natural 'sink' for waste materials.

Perceived threats to South Australia's marine and coastal biota and ecosystems are many. They include overfishing, inappropriate coastal development, pollution from point and diffuse source discharges (eg. nutrients, heavy metals, halogenated organic compounds), oil spills, anti-foulants, ballast water, micro algal blooms, marine diseases and the impacts of climate change (particularly in coastal processes).

Impacts arising from their use and threats and further information about South Australia's marine environment can be obtained through the Department of Environment and Heritage's website.
